Dagmar Kusá, PhD.

Associate Professor, Undergraduate Studies Coordinator

Dagmar Kusá received her MA in political science from Comenius University her PhD. in political science from Boston University. Prior to BISLA, Dagmar worked in the Slovak Helsinki Committee for Human Rights and served on its Board of Directors. In 2008/2009, she served as a projects coordinator at EUROCLIO, the European Association of History Educators in the Hague. Since 2004, Dagmar was the Program Director at the Bostonian International Center for Conciliation, where she remains affiliated as a Senior Fellow and trainer in identity conflicts transformation.  Her primary academic interests include the political use of collective memory, ethnic identity, citizenship and minorities, at present focusing on the manifestations of cultural trauma in public discourse. She serves as the country expert on citizenship at the European Democratic Observatory (at EUI) and co-organizes a global annual Muslim-Jewish Conference. She is the Vice President of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Slovakia.

Research interests

My current research focuses on the memory regimes: the quality of democracy in countries transitioning from totalitarian or authoritarian regimes and its relation to the institutional choices of addressing the past, particularly in the context of South African and Central European transitions.

Previous research projects concerned the area of citizenship – as a status and as political practice, as well as a narrative interpretation. I also utilize narrative approach to study cultural trauma in political discourse, especially in the Slovak-Hungarian relations. Other areas of research interest involve human rights, minorities, ethnic conflict and conflict transformation. Of special interest is the use of narrative approaches (and historical narratives) in conflict transformation.

The World After the Pandemic (BISLA-CEU-Bard)

Po prvých mesiacoch pandémie sa výskumný tím na BISLA spolu so študentmi rozhodli zorganizovať impromptu konferenciu o svete po pandémii z pohľadu rôznych akademických disciplín. Konferencia bola organizovaná online a streamovaná na YouTube a Facebooku s vysokou sledovanosťou.

Výstupná konferencia nášho APVV projektu bola pôvodne naplánovaná na apríl 2020 v tradičnej lokalite Modry-Harmónie. Kvôli pandémii sa presunula o pár mesiacov neskôr a napokon aj na online platformu. Napriek tomu konferencia úspešne zhodnotila výskum projektového tímu za päť rokov svojho pôsobenia a svoje výstupy prezentovali takmer všetci členovia výskumného tímu a mnohí hostia. Jej organizácia online navyše umožnila dostupnosť konferencie aj pre mnohých návštevníkov, ktorí by inak nemali príležitosť sa konferencie zúčastniť.

Témou siedmeho výročného Liberal Heraldu, organizovaného spolu s Bard College in Berlin a Central European University boli “Stories, Histories, Memories”– príbehy, dejiny, pamäť. Konferencia sa venovala politicizácii pamäte počas obdobia pand’=mie autoritárskeho populizmu posledných rokov. Pozostávala zo šiestich panelov (fenomenológia a historicita, umenie a literatúra, politika pamätí, pamäť vo verejnom priestore, naratívy minulosti, filozofia histórie), dvoch keynote prednášok (Charles Sabatos Bratislava as a cultural borderland in the Danubian narratives of Leigh Fermor and Magris  a Philip Gamaghelyan Memory as an obstacle to peace in the Caucasus region). Program bol zavŕšený okrúhlym stolom s expertmi z Pakistanu, Konga, Brazílie, Izraela, Tuniska a Maďarska. 

Herald bol organizovaný a moderovaný Dagmar Kusou a Jamesom Griffithom.

 Diskusia zo série Hodnoty-Vzdelávanie-Sloboda sa v pondelok (20. 11. 2023) uskutočnila v priestoroch BISLA – Bratislava International School of Liberal Arts.

Rektor BISLA, Samuel Abrahám, otvoril diskusiu s akademičkami a odborníčkami na ľudské  práva, Dagmar Kusa a Andrea Erdőšová. Predsedníčka Helsinského výboru na Slovensku, Sylvia Tiryaki, sa ujala moderovania.

Témy zahŕňali hrozbu dezinformácií v spoločnosti, boj proti nim, ale aj otázky o autorite v rámci identifikácie dezinformácií. Sloboda prejavu je jednou z oblastí zahrnutých v našej príručke ľudských práv v rámci projektu Human Rights Guide.
