ETHICAL USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

One of the main focuses this academic year is mastering our cohabitation with artificial intelligence. We are learning a lot about it, how to use it and where it is counterproductive to use it, which tools make our work in academic research more effective, and where is the line that should not be crossed to preserve originality, authenticity, and creativity of authorship. Our activities include series of workshops, AI Club, pop-up courses, student leaders team coordinating AI-related activities, research, and policy design. The process is also an excellent model for thinking about policies in other areas.

AI AWARE UNIVERSITIES

Our AI Ethics activities- club, workshops, courses, and more–are a part of a 6 university project led by the American University in Bulgaria. The goal is to arrive at guidelines for ethical use of AI at universities in a deliberative fashion

LEARNING

From December to March, students, staff, and faculty learn the basics about the AI, the infrastructure behind it, AI use in various contexts, tools in academia, challenges and moral hurdles through series of workshops, pop-up courses, lectures, visits to partner organizations, and own research.

Deliberating guidelines on ethical use of AI

The outcomes of the project are not only a policy on which students, staff, and faculty arrive together after months of learning. Equally important is the model of deliberative policymaking, which is already being implemented to other areas of policy development. It leads to transparent governance with which everyone is on board.
